My latest adventure

My husband has always wanted me to have a garden, and frankly I have never had any interest. I even hate taking care of the minimal landscaping that we DO have. Watering flowers? Not my thing. I have the responsibility of keeping two children alive, and frankly, that’s enough. Some people LOVE doing that kind of stuff and spending their whole weekends working with plants and landscaping, and I am just not one of those people.

This year, I decided it was time for a garden.

My sister in law brought up the idea of doing a pallet garden, and after she showed me the inspiration photo on Pinterest, we decided to go for it.

Essentially, you lay pallets in the area where your garden is, fill the slats with soil, and then plant in the rows like shown above. It is supposed to cut down on the weeds (since they can’t get through the bottom of the pallet) and you can use as many pallets as you want! For now, we decided to do two pallets with space in between for tomato plants and cucumbers.

We settled on using part of the north side of our yard, and Brandon used a sod stripper to tear out the grass for our space. He also cut the pallets down slightly so they would fit better, and be more of a solid base. So far, we have planted white onions, red onions, radishes, jalepenos, 3 kinds of lettuce, and carrots. On our list? Tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, cabbage, serrano peppers, and watermelon. We also plan on mulching around the outside so that when it rains, we can still be out tending to the garden without being a muddy mess.

I am excited to see what we come up with– right now, it has been so rainy and cold to do a lot with the garden, but once it warms up, I am sure we will be spending a lot more time out there.

Do you have a garden? Any tricks or tips I should know about?
