Zoo Trip

A couple of weeks ago my mom, sister, brother’s girlfriend and I took the kids to Brookfield Zoo outside of Chicago. I had really, really high expectations for that trip– which was my first mistake.

After getting through 1/4 of the zoo, a nasty storm was making its way in, so we decided we better bail and head to the hotel and maybe take the kids swimming. I had the paperwork from the hotel, I put the address in my Maps on my iPhone, and off we went. Except that when we got to where my map said the hotel was? It was a McDonalds next to a cigarette outlet.

Major Fail.

After checking things out and promising that I didn’t screw up (the hotel name was ON MY MAP on my PHONE thank you very much), we decided at this point, we should just head home. We made plans to take Brayden to see a movie and a possible sleepover at grandma’s since I knew he would be upset.

And then the unthinkable happened. We drove RIGHT BY THE HOTEL. My mom goes “Oh my goodness, there it is!!” And we were all like “what?” And before she could even speak she veered off the interstate, just barely missed the exit sign itself, and hit some random hub cap laying in the road.

I can’t make this stuff up, people. My mom was laughing so hard, she could barely compose herself to go check into the hotel, and the kids woke up wondering why we were all laughing so hard.

We checked in to the hotel, went swimming, did some shopping and ordered pizza. Fun, right? Well, the real fun started when Kenley wouldn’t go to bed. She fought me until 11:45 pm and oh, I was about to lose my mind. I didn’t take the pack and play just because I thought she would be so exhausted, she would just sleep with Brayden in the pull out bed. Boy was I wrong. Finally, she cashed out on my shoulder, but was up for good at 6:30. For my normal 8:30pm-8:30am sleeper? This was not enough and BOY was she crabby.

We survived– even make a quick trip to IKEA on the way home! The kids had fun, and overall so did I. I was just bummed that I didn’t get more photos, and that we didn’t get to see more at the zoo. There’s always next time, right?
